Where are your venues?

His Majesty’s Theatre is located on the Rosemount Viaduct, next door to the Aberdeen Central Library. The main entrance is on Rosemount Viaduct, with Stage Door located on Skene Street.

The Music Hall is located on Union Street.

The Lemon Tree is located on West North Street, just along from the King Street junction. The main entrance is on West North Street, with Stage Door and disabled access on Shoe Lane.


Where can I park?

We offer HMT customers a discount when parking at Bon Accord or Harriet Street car park. You will be issued a parking token on entry to the car park. Please just take this to the HMT box office counter before the show and we will validate it. The cost of this is £2. Please note, the car parking ticket is valid between 5.30pm & 11pm, we can only validate tokens for cars parked between these times. This service is not available for shows at The Lemon Tree.

Denburn carpark which is an off street pay and display is situated behind His Majesty’s Theatre. Details of charges for this are available on the Aberdeen city council website.

Disabled permit holders can park in the designated parking bays outside the old foyer doors of His Majesty’s Theatre, or alternatively in the bays on Union Terrace.


Is there a bus or train station nearby?

There are bus stops directly outside all three of our venues, and also within short walking distances. Service maps for First Bus can be found here.

If you are travelling by train, Aberdeen train station is a two minute walk from Union Street from where you will be able to reach any of our venues within minutes.


Where can I eat?

Enjoy a beautiful pre-theatre meal in the 1906 Restaurant at His Majesty’s Theatre. Serving a delicious contemporary menu, featuring locally-sourced produce, a reservation at 1906 will enhance your theatre-going experience. The restaurant is open from 10.30am every day, with a pre-theatre menu from 5pm – 7.30pm; then à la carte menu available after 7.30pm.


What should I wear?

There is no formal dress code for attending a show at our venues, other than the prohibition of sporting jerseys such as football shirts.


My Visit


What are your opening hours?

The Box Office is open at His Majesty’s Theatre and the Music Hall Monday - Saturday, from 9.30am - 6pm. On the evening of performances, the Box Offices will usually be open one hour before the performance start time. This can vary for certain gigs at The Lemon Tree Box Office.

1906 Café is open Monday - Saturday from 9.30am, serving drinks and cold food. 1906 Restaurant is open from 10.30am for an all-day menu with a pre-theatre menu being served from between 5pm and 7.30pm.

Opening hours on Bank Holidays vary.
 

What facilities do you have for disabled customers?

For full information on our access services, click here. There is level access to all of our venues (level access to the Lemon Tree situated on Shoe Lane), with lift access to all floors.

Disabled toilets are situated every venue and are equipped with grab rails, sink lever operated taps, low level mirrors and pull cord alarms.

We can accommodate several wheelchair user spaces in all of our venues. Please make Box Office aware when booking if you require a wheelchair user space. If the show is standing-only and you require seating, we will do our best to accommodate your needs. If you could make Box Office aware when booking, it will make the process much easier. If you are unable to contact the Box Office prior to the performance, please make the Duty Manager aware of your needs.

His Majesty’s Theatre is equipped with an induction loop system in the main auditorium; dead spots do exist, however, so please ask the Duty Manager if you should have any concerns. The theatre bars are also equipped with the loop system as are the box offices. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you have increased access requirements so we can ensure that you have the best seating, and price, possible.

If you would like one of these, please ask one of the front-of-house members of staff. The majority of shows that come to His Majesty’s Theatre are audio-described performances, with some captioned performances. Please ask at the box office for show-specific information.

Assistance Dogs are welcome.
 

What time do the shows start?

At His Majesty’s Theatre the start time is the time printed on your ticket, the show will always start promptly at the advertised time. We recommend that you arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the time printed on your ticket. Access to the Bars and foyers will be from 1 hour prior to this time and access to the auditorium will be 30 minutes before the performance start time.

At The Lemon Tree Tickets will either be printed with a Doors Time, this will be the time that the front doors open and allow access into the venue, or a start Time which is the time the performance starts. When a performance is advertised as a start time access to the venue will be 45 minutes before the start of the performance.


What happens if I am late?

For some shows we may have to ask you to wait for a suitable break in the performance before we can allow you to take your seats. Occasionally this can mean waiting until the interval. The admission of latecomers is solely at the discretion of the Duty Manager.


Can I leave my coat or bag with someone?

In His Majesty’s Theatre there are designated areas for coats situated in the old foyer and the stalls. Any belongings left in these areas are done so at the owner’s risk.

The Lemon Tree has a cloakroom situated opposite the Box Office. This is used only for certain shows and incurs a small fee of £2.


Can I buy a drink before the show?

The theatre bars are always open before a show from 1 hour prior to the start of the performance, serving a range of drinks. You can also take your drink into the main auditorium for most shows, provided they are in the plastic cups found around the bar. As we expect our bars to be very busy during the interval, we recommend that you place your interval drinks order in any of our bars before the show begins.

In some shows at The Lemon Tree, the bar remains open during the performance. Only alcohol sold on the premises may be taken or consumed within the venues.


Do you sell sweets and confectionary items?

We sell an assortment of sweets, soft drinks, programmes and ice-creams in our venues. Our Front-of-House team also offers a selection of merchandise for certain shows in the foyers of our venues.
 

Where are the toilets?

Toilets are located on every floor of our venues, with accessible toilets being located on certain levels at His Majesty’s Theatre and the Music Hall. These are well sign-posted throughout the building.


Is there a lift?

A lift is located in the foyers of His Majesty’s Theatre and The Lemon Tree; offering convenient access to all floors of the venues (with the exception of the Balcony at His Majesty’s Theatre). If you require additional assistance, please speak to a member of our Front of House team on your arrival at the theatre.


Do the shows use special effects?

Some shows will use special effects such as strobe lighting, smoke effects or loud noises. Whenever possible, signage will be placed throughout the building advising you about the use of special effects. If you have any concerns regarding the use of special effects, please contact Box Office on 01224 641122.


Is there always an interval?

Whether a show has an interval depends on the length of the show. Most shows have an interval which will last for 15 or 20 minutes. During this time, you can remain in your seat, visit one of the venue’s bars, or enjoy an ice-cream available for purchase on every level. As we expect our bars to be very busy during the interval, we recommend that you place your interval drinks order in any of our bars before the show begins.

Please note, as the bar remains open throughout a show at the Lemon Tree Lounge pre-orders are not available. There are also no pre-orders for a Lemon Tree Studio show.


What time do shows normally end?

Running times vary greatly between shows and venues. If you have any questions please contact Box Office on 01224 641122 for further information. We also endeavour to add running times to the individual show information listings on our website as soon as they are confirmed.


Do you offer Booster Seats for Children?

At His Majesty’s Theatre we have booster seats available for children, these are given out on a first come first served basis and are available in all levels from our front of House staff. Please leave your booster seat on your seat at the end of the performance where it will be collected.


Who do I contact for lost property?

If you realise that you have lost a piece of property in one of our venues please contact Angela.Sim@aberdeenperformingarts.com or call 01224 641122 and press option 3. All Lost property found in our venues will be logged and kept for 2 weeks before being disposed (valuables will be passed across to the Police Scotland lost property department)


My Tickets


Where are the Stalls?

The Stalls is the name we use for the ground floor in the main auditorium. In the case of His Majesty’s Theatre this is, in fact, one level lower than the main entrance. At His Majesty’s Theatre, street level is called the Dress Circle; the next floor up is called the Upper Circle. The top floor is called the Balcony.

Seating for shows at the Lemon Tree Lounge and Studio are not reserved and are all one level.


What does Restricted View mean?

There are certain seats in His Majesty’s Theatre which are classed as 'Restricted View'. This means that a structural feature, such as a pillar or hand-rail, or seating at an angle that will partially block your view of the stage. Degrees of restriction vary, but your view of the stage is never completely impeded, and the seats are discounted because of this. You will always be told if you are booking a restricted view seat before you purchase it.


Can I pick my own seats?

When booking tickets via our website, you may be allocated the best available seats, or can select the specific seats that you wish to buy from a seating plan. Please note that, although we make every effort to ensure all seating plans are correct, for partner venues (venues other than the APA venues of HMT, Music Hall & Lemon Tree) seating plans are indicitive only and actual seats may vary.
 

What discounts and concessions are available?

Special discounts vary greatly from show to show. Please check with Box Office before purchasing your tickets to see what discounts are available for a particular show. Where children's (under 16), family, senior citizen (over 60) or student discounts are available, they will also be redeemable online.

Friends of APA also get discounts for most shows across our three venues, such as 2-for-1 on tickets for opening night at His Majesty’s Theatre or money off. There are a wide range of benefits that you can get if you become a friend of APA. For more information, click here.

There are Student offers at His Majesty’s Theatre, Music Hall and The Lemon Tree available by showing a valid student card at our box office counters. Look out for these symbols for shows with our new student offers for selected performances:

Student Tickets
Available to students, up to 26 years, and can be purchased at all times.

Student Standbys
Standby tickets are available on the day of performance and subject to availability.
 

Do groups and schools get a special rate?

A standard Group Rate is available for most shows at His Majesty’s Theatre, and applies to groups of 10 or more customers. Please contact Box Office for further information. We often also offer special rates for schools for weekday matinees. Please check with Box Office for further information.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept the following debit/credit cards: Visa, Visa Debit, Visa Electron, Mastercard, Switch/Maestro, Delta.

Please note that we do not except personal cheques. Company cheques should be made payable to Aberdeen Performing Arts.


Can I use my friend's credit card to pay?

No, this is fraud. It must be your own payment card. Our security measures mean that the card used to make the purchase must be registered to the address of the person booking the tickets. This is to protect our customers from fraudulent use of their credit or debit cards.


What do you do with my credit/debit card details?

We use these details only to process your booking; as soon as your booking has been processed, your details are encrypted and are not stored on our system.


What do you do with my personal details?

We store your personal contact details so that we can communicate with you, advising you of upcoming events that might be of interest to you. If you do not want us to contact you, please let us know. We will never share your details with anyone else.


When will I receive my tickets?

If you have purchased tickets for a show at one of our own venues, tickets are normally despatched two weeks prior to the event.

If you have purchased tickets through us for a venue outside of Aberdeen Performing Arts, such as the AECC, your tickets will be sent out as soon as we receive them.

If you do not receive your tickets or need to change your delivery details, please contact Box Office on 01224 641122.


I want to collect my tickets in person, where do I do that?

If you opt to collect your tickets in person, you can collect them from the Box Office Counter at the venues. You will need the Booking Reference number and be able to confirm the name and address details for the booking. Remember, if you are collecting tickets before the show, there can sometimes be a queue at Box Office so please leave plenty of time.


Can I get a refund on my tickets?

We cannot refund tickets so please check carefully when booking. We will exchange tickets for another performance of the same production to those of the same value, upon return of the original tickets to the Box Office.


What if there is a cancellation?

Aberdeen Performing Arts does not accept liability for refunding tickets in the event of the cancellation or postponement of a performance, this decision is at the sole discretion of the Event Promoter. Do you sell Gift Vouchers?

We sell APA Gift Vouchers in any denominations required. Valid for 12 months, APA Gift Vouchers may be used to buy tickets for performances across all three of our venues. Gift Vouchers can be redeemed in person at the Box Office or online. We regret that Gift Vouchers cannot be extended or replaced under any circumstances.


What is the Booking Fee for?

Booking fees of £2.50 apply for HMT performances and 10% of ticket price at The Lemon Tree apply across website, phone lines and box office counters. This booking fee helps to ensure our theatre as a sustainable business.

 

Why do I pay booking fees?

As we are a charity and sell tickets for shows at other venues, the booking fee helps us continue to operate as a business. Like every business it is imperative we cover all our costs and our share of revenue we take from the ticket price wouldn’t allow us to do this sufficiently. We want to provide the best and most convenient ticket box office service for our customers. To make this possible it takes considerable resource, both in terms of staffing and investment in new ticket technologies. The booking fee enables us to ensure that you will enjoy the best possible customer experience when you buy tickets from us, now and in the future, as well as enabling us to continue to offer a varied range and high quality of programming.

Our booking fees are among the most competitive in the industry and we strive to keep them low to ensure you get to see all your favourite shows whilst allowing us to cover our costs. We also ensure that all costs are included in the advertised ticket price so there are no surprises for you when purchasing at the box office

 

What is the Restoration Levy for?

There is a restoration charge of £1.50 per ticket for shows at His Majesty’s Theatre and the Music Hall. It is ring-fenced for investment in the preservation, improvement and enhancement of our buildings, technical department, Health and Safety obligations and in all areas of customer service to ensure that the comfort and safety of all customers and visitors is maintained to the highest standard.

Latecomers Policy

Photography

Due to copyright and safety issues, the use of photographic, sound recording and mobile communications equipment is not permitted during performances at any of our venues.


Tickets for babies

Children under two are free for performances sold with reserved seating, provided they can sit on their parent’s knees. If you wish you child to have a seat of their own, a ticket must be bought.

Please note that regardless of age, any person deemed to be disruptive to the audience may be asked to leave the auditorium at the discretion of the Duty Manager (without refund).


Use of Mobile Phones

For the enjoyment of all customers, the use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited during performances.


Upgrading tickets

Occasionally we may have to reseat audience members but will ensure that the seat they are moved to is of equal or greater ticket value.
 

Admission Restrictions

The Venue management reserves the right to refuse admission or eject persons in reasonable circumstances and may on occasion have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of customers. Any person deemed to be disruptive to the audience may be asked to leave the auditorium at the discretion of the Duty Manager (without refund).
