A Venetian Christmas

Musical Director: Peter Parfitt

On Sunday December 7th at 7.45pm in St Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen Bach Choir will perform “A Venetian Christmas” - Renaissance music from St. Mark’s. The choir is delighted to welcome the well-known and internationally acclaimed brass ensemble His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts, and the Monteverdi String Band, period instrument string players who will join the choir for an authentic performance of Monteverdi’s Christmas Vespers, six Christmas motets by Giovanni Gabrieli and Venetian instrumental music from the late sixteenth century.

Both Gabrieli and Monteverdi held the position of organist at St Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, and their compositional styles mark the culmination of the high renaissance style and the shift to the idioms of the new Baroque period.
