GARRY WALKER Conductor
MIKHAIL KAZAKEVICH Piano
William Mathias: Invocation and Dance
Paul Mealor: The Way of the Cross
Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme of Paganini
Beethoven: Seventh Symphony
In this programme full of contrasts, Aberdeen Sinfonietta is privileged to present the Scottish premiere of Paul Mealor’s short piece for strings, The Way of the Cross, which is dedicated to the memory of the Welsh composer William Mathias. Appropriately this new work is paired with a powerful and exciting work by Mathias himself. Rachmaninov’s superb Variations on a Theme of Paganini, in which the brilliant soloist is Mikhail Kazakevich, represents a return to a more Romantic age, while the second half of the concert consists of a timeless favourite – Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.
This concert is part of sound, North East Scotland’s contemporary music festival.
