Fresh from its sellout production of Sunshine on Leith, Aberdeen Opera Company Productions are delighted to return to HMT with Chess

Music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus
Lyrics by Tim Rice
Based on an idea by Tim Rice
This amateur production of “Chess (UK Version)” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH Ltd.

A sensational musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA, this award winning show features hit songs such as “I Know Him So Well”, “One Night in Bangkok”, “Anthem” and “Pity the Child”.

A powerful love story set amid the tensions of a world championship chess match, the Cold War and a frenzied media circus.  Two world class chess players, an American and a Russian, fight for supremacy both on the chess board and for the love of the same woman.  From Bangkok to Budapest, the players, lovers, politicians and spies all struggle to get the upper hand.

“Everybody’s playing the game but nobody’s rules are the same. Nobody’s on nobody’s side.”

Chess at HMT last night was a sensation. I've been going to see Aberdeen Opera Company for nearly 50 years and this was one of the most outstanding performances I've seen. The cast was superb as was the orchestra which didn't overpower the voices and the dancers were an added delight. A truly wonderful show.
