JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion was first performed at Easter between 1727 and 1729, and has since become one of the towering works of classical music. It brings together two orchestras and choruses to create a powerful meditation on the story of Christ’s crucifi xion, as related by the Gospel of Matthew.
Using similar forces and instruments to those that Bach would have used, the Dunedin Consort makes use of 8 individual solo voices alongside the group’s characteristically virtuosic instrumental players, highlighting a real sense of clarity and emotional expression in exploring what is often considered Bach’s masterpiece.
