Ensemble Season: Dunedin Consort presents Purcell & Handel Royal Music
John Butt - Director
Originally composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, Handel’s coronation anthems Zadok the Priest and My heart is inditing are among his best-loved choral pieces. With the splendour of trumpets and drums and their rousing beginnings, we hear Handel at his most extroverted.
The Ode to St Cecilia is one of Henry Purcell’s largest choral works and presents a fitting tribute to the patron saint of music. Purcell makes use of a number of dance forms, typifying the elegance and poise that were to become hallmarks of the English baroque.
