Jazz at the Blue Lamp presents

Leo Blanco

Thursday  27 June 2013 Doors 8pm

As anyone who witnessed his rapturously received appearance at the Blue Lamp in 2007 will confirm, Venezuelan pianist Leo Blanco is a genuine virtuoso with a huge musical personality. His music is rooted in the Africa-Latina rhythms of his homeland and enriched by the vast knowledge of jazz and understanding of the classical tradition that you might expect from a musician who was appointed professor of piano at America’s premier music college, Berklee, as soon as he graduated. As a composer Blanco has scored music for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, his own string quartet and most recently, Scottish horn quartet Brass Jaw, and his recordings have featured saxophonists Dave Liebman and Donny McCaslin, West African guitarist Lionel Loueke, Grammy award-winning singer Luciana Souza, and drummer Antonio Sanchez. His solo concerts are enthralling and rhapsodic displays of technical command and emotional communication, showing why on previous visits to Scotland Blanco has earned five-star reviews from The Scotsman and The Herald, drawn standing ovations at Aberdeen Jazz Festival and is the proud winner of a coveted Bank of Scotland Herald Angel, awarded for outstanding performances during the Edinburgh Festival.
