An Evening in Queer Berlin’ is a unique combination of a talk, reading, screening, and exhibition which introduces audiences to the fascinating history of queer Berlin in the Weimar era. Keava McMillan and Shane Strachan present an overview of the thriving LGBT culture of 1920s Berlin, guiding the audience though the nightlife, social clubs, and activist organisations which gave the city a reputation as a haven for gay and transgender people. This vibrant world is brought to life through a series of readings and a small exhibition. The talk sets the scene for a screening of the silent film Different from the Others. Starring Conrad Veidt, this 1919 film features an early gay protagonist and openly agitates for LGBT rights.
