ABERDEEN YOUTH MUSIC THEATRE "PIRATES OF PENZANCE”
WS Gilbert & Sir Arthur Sullivan
(Adapted by Essgee Entertainment)
This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Stagescripts Ltd
Always looking for a challenge, our senior group are staging Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” (the Australian version). Just when you think you have seen every rendition of this classic, along comes Essgee Entertainment who have given this operatta a fresh and modern take. This version has a much funnier panto style script and although keeping the original score, the orchestrations have been modernised with a fabulous “megamix” added at the end.
“Pirates” follows young Frederic, an orphan who was meant to be an apprentice to a pilot but his maid has mistakenly made him an apprentice to a pirate. He disapproves the pirates’ way of life and when he discovers he was never meant to be a pirate, he informs the Pirate King that he will exterminate them unless they depart immediately. Frederic is left alone with is maid when a group of young attractive women appear and he falls for the beautiful Mabel. The pirates return and Mable threatens them that their actions will not go unpunished since her father, the Major-General has pretended to be an orphan himself in order to win their sympathy. Frederic is left caught in the middle with his sense of duty as a pirate and his love for Mabel.
