Cello Concerto No 1
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
Symphony No 5

Rumon Gamba Conductor
Guy Johnston

At the heart of the firestorm of World War II, Ralph Vaughan Williams looked around himself and saw a vision of peace. Serene, spiritual and heartbreakingly lovely, Vaughan Williams’ Fifth is quite simply one of the finest symphonies ever composed in Britain. It’s a wonderful contrast to Britten’s deadpan take on English folklore – and a startlingly different world to Shostakovich’s tense political thriller of a Cello Concerto. Rumon Gamba and the masterly Guy Johnston will lay its secrets bare.

Pre-concert Talk 6.45pm (free to ticket holders)
