Early cartographers attempted to present the location and appearance of landscape features as effectively as possible, eventually leading to Ordnance Survey-style products. However the appeal of more pictorial map-like images, which characterised early maps, continued and evolved. This talk presents a technical and artistic history of this fascinating genre which became enriched in the digital age. These representations are based on science but characterized by art.
