Wild Dolphins Charity Auction

HOTLY ANTICPATED TICKETS TO WILD DOLPHINS AUCTION TO GO ON SALE TODAY

Roll up for the big Wild Dolphin FINale

Fans of Aberdeen’s hugely successful Wild Dolphins art trail are to have the chance to join in the bidding action when all 50 are auctioned to raise money for charity.

The evening auction will be held at the city’s Music Hall on Wednesday, September 10 from 7pm and public tickets for the event go on sale today (MONDAY) at Aberdeen Box Office.

Demand is expected to be extremely high for the balcony tickets, which are priced at £10 each.

Guests and sponsors are also being invited to attend the auction, which will see every one of the Wild Dolphins auctioned off.

All proceeds from the night will be split between The ARCHIE Foundation, the official charity of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, to support its work protecting local dolphins who live off the Aberdeen coast.

The project has been hailed as a spectacular success, with more than 10,000 people downloading a smartphone app to help them find all 50 of the dolphin sculptures, and many thousands of others touring the city with paper maps and taking “dolphies” – photos of themselves next to their favourite dolphin.

Cassie Thompson, director of fundraising at The ARCHIE Foundation, said: “The response to the Wild Dolphins trail has been incredible and tens of thousands of people have been touring around Aberdeen to see them all over summer.

“We have had a lot of interest from companies and individuals who are very keen to bid for particular Wild Dolphins so the auction looks set to be a very exciting night! We’re delighted that the public have the chance to come along and get involved in the atmosphere.”

Stine Bang, events fundraising manager at WDC, said: “All the hard work by the Wild Dolphins team and all the artists leads us to the auction, when each of these beautiful sculptures will be sold to the highest bidder before going off to their new homes.

“All the money raised on the night will go to WDC and ARCHIE, to support local causes in the North-east of Scotland, so we hope all our bidders will dig deep and help us to raise as much as possible to allow us to carry on our vital work.”

Before the auction, all of the Wild Dolphins will be put on display together at the quadrangle at Marischal College so fans can see them together for the final time. Further details will be issued later this week.

The Wild Dolphins project has seen 50 life-sized fibreglass sculptures of bottlenose dolphins - usually spotted off the North-east coast - popping up all over town, including the beach, harbour, parks, golf courses, shopping centres, hotels and Torry Battery, a known hotspot for watching real dolphins.

Each of the brightly coloured dolphins has been sponsored by businesses and then designed by artists, commissioned from across the UK to create designs specifically for Aberdeen.

Aberdeen is the latest city to benefit from the successful Wild in Art sculpture projects, which have previously seen giant cartoon Gromits in Bristol, GoGo Gorillas in Norwich and SuperLambBananas in Liverpool.

The dolphins were a refreshing, colourful, exciting and inspirational change to our landscape. They should be a permanent fixture here in grey Aberdeen. Was so sad and emotional to see them disappear. Even my daughter was crying. Hail the return of the dolphins on our landscape :)
