City’s favourite comedy lads to return for HMT panto Aladdin

It may only be March, but the stars of Pantoland are already looking to Christmas! Aberdeen Performing Arts is delighted to announce the city’s favourite panto pair will return to His Majesty’s Theatre for this year’s festive extravaganza Aladdin.

Comedic duo Alan McHugh and Jordan Young will appear in Aladdin at His Majesty’s Theatre from Saturday, December 2 – Sunday, January 7, 2018. This year’s production is produced by Qdos Entertainment – the world’s biggest pantomime producer. Further star casting is still to be announced.

As well as donning a frock and lippie for his role as the Dame, Alan McHugh is the treasured writer behind the city’s favourite pantomime. Alan has penned the show for the past 13 years and has played the dame for as many.

Alan said: “Panto is an all-year round job for me. Once I get to the end of one panto season, I immediately start work on developing the following year’s script for HMT. I relish the challenge to breathe new life into the traditional panto stories, and come up with fresh, funny and exciting material. What’s so special about the HMT show is that we give the city and people of Aberdeen their very own panto with its own identity – celebrating the city, its people and its very own specific culture. So, I guarantee a great family night out – a roller coaster ride of Doric thrills, spills (not all of them rehearsed!), special effects, song, dance, and belly laughs from start to finish!”

River City’s Jordan Young, who plays Alex McAllister in the soap, will also return to the Granite City for the production. No stranger to raising laughs from his audience, Jordan has also been in BBC Scotland’s hilarious spoof comedy Scot Squad, and he has appeared in the HMT panto for the past 9 years.

Jordan added: “Panto season is a really brilliant time of year and I love being part of that. Aberdeen audiences are something else, they’re so warm and friendly and I’m really pleased to be returning to HMT.”

APA chief executive Jane Spiers said: “We are very excited to welcome back the dream team that is Alan and Jordan – they are true entertainers and have our audiences in stitches of laughter from start to finish. Alan, as well as being our fantastic Dame, is one of the best pantomime writers in the country and we are privileged to have his brains behind the script once more.

“At the end of our last pantomime, Dick McWhittington, we bid a very fond farewell to the wonderful Elaine C. Smith, who had been our panto queen for many years. Elaine came to Aberdeen eight years ago to do her first pantomime here, and the warmth of our Aberdonian audiences kept her coming back year after year.

“Our festive show at HMT is always a special event in the calendar and this year promises to be as magical as ever, with some of the best comic writing around, brilliant feel-good songs, jaw-dropping costumes and lots of fun for all ages.”

Michael Harrison, managing director of Qdos Entertainment’s pantomimes division and Executive Producer of the pantomime, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back Alan and Jordan for another HMT pantomime. As Aberdeen audiences know they have such brilliant comic timing and a fantastic chemistry making them the perfect pantomime pairing in a show that will be packed full of laughter, audience participation and some amazing special effects.”
