Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) is delighted to announce its bid to change the name of Aberdeen to ABBAdeen in commemoration of the smash hit musical MAMMA MIA! today received backing.
APA chief executive Jane Spiers said: “As we all know, time is money, money, money and we don’t want to waste a moment. Therefore the signage at the city limits will display the new name from today, April 1 to Saturday, October 14 when performances of MAMMA MIA! come to an end.
“I have a dream that tourists will take a chance on ABBAdeen and flock to the region to see this spectacular show. When all is said and done, boosting the city’s cultural scene is the name of the game, and we didn’t want to let this opportunity to put Aberdeen on the map slip through our fingers.”
The re-naming of the city comes as box office-busting musical MAMMA MIA!makes its way to the North-east. The sensational feel-good show runs at His Majesty’s Theatre from Tuesday, September 19 to Saturday, October 14. The irresistible tale, which inspired the blockbuster film of the same name, has thrilled audiences all over the world with its sunny tale of one girl’s quest to discover the identity of her father.
Ms Spiers added: “MAMMA MIA! is a truly enchanting tale told with so much energy and vibrancy on stage and we’re very excited to welcome the tour to our theatre. The show is packed with some of ABBA’s finest songs, including The Winner Takes it All, SOS, Knowing Me Knowing You and of course, the title track Mamma Mia. I’m sure there will plenty of dancing quines (and loons!) in the aisles when the show opens.”
