Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother has waved her magic wand to conjure up a wee Rab C re-union onstage at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen.
For panto star Elaine C Smith is to be joined by River City’s Barbara Rafferty in this year’s HMT panto, alongside Aberdeen favourites Alan McHugh and Jordan Young.
The two Scottish actresses – and pals - formerly co-starred in the hugely popular BBC 2 tv sitcom Rab C Nesbitt, the 10th series of which was broadcast last autumn; Elaine as Mary-Doll and Barbara as Ella Cotter.
In the Qdos Entertainment production of Cinderella, which runs at HMT from November 30 to January 5, Elaine will take on the role of Fairy Godmother with Barbara as the Wicked Step-Mother and Jordan as Buttons while panto writer and dame-extraordinaire Alan will be once again pulling on his fantastic frocks as the Ugly Sister.
Said Elaine: “I’m absolutely delighted that my dear pal Babs Rafferty is joining the cast - I have known for years that she would be a fabulous addition to the team and I know how much she loves the city and the audiences here.
“We’ve worked together for 25 years, mainly on television, but not on the stage for about 10 years. I’m thrilled that we are going to get the chance to work together in live performances on the stage at His Majesty’s.”
And Barbara added: “Having worked with Elaine together on so many occasions for television, I am so looking forward to getting back together and this time sharing a stage with her this Christmas.
"I love performing in panto and here in Aberdeen at His Majesty’s they retain the standards of traditional panto - it is a real pleasure to be part of this fantastic team.”
Following in the magnificent tradition of a string of successful HMT pantos – Peter Pan, Cinderella,Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk and Snow White - this year’s festive show promises to be an equally-fabulous treat with sumptuous costumes, stunning sets, an abundance of comedy and an amazing flying horse to transport Cinderella and her coach to the ball!
Elaine has starred in the last four record-breaking pantomimes at the Aberdeen theatre and is one of the entertainment industry’s most talented performers.
As well as Rab C Nesbitt, she has starred in numerous comedy series such as City Lights (BBC Scotland) and Naked Video (BBC) and BBC dramas Two Thousand Acres of Skye and 55 Degrees North. In January last year she appeared on Celebrity Mastermind as well as guesting on Loose Women, The Wright Stuff and The Paul O’Grady Show. In the same year, she completed a major UK tour in the Susan Boyle story, I Dreamed a Dream, which she co-wrote with fellow panto star Alan McHugh.
Best known for playing Ella, Barbara is also famed as crimper Shirley Henderson in the BBC Scotland soap River City. Other notable television roles include playing pub landlady Agnes Meldrum in Hamish Macbeth and Alice MacAllister in The Young Person's Guide To Becoming A Rock Star.
In the 2006 film The Last King of Scotland, she starred as Mrs Garrigan and she last appeared in His Majesty’s Theatre as the Baroness in Chitty Chitty Bang 2009.
