Something for everyone as new brochure for city theatre is unveiled

Two fantastic feel-good musicals are among the new shows announced today by Aberdeen Performing Arts for His Majesty’s Theatre.

Gloriously glamorous show Crazy For You, starring Strictly’s Tom Chambers, will high kick its way into the city theatre from March 27 – 31 next year, followed by the empowering tale of Flashdance, which will play from June 4 - 9, 2018.

Later this year, The Ultimate Eagles will play on October 16, with The Simon & Garfunkel Story the following night on October 17. Family show The Gruffalo’s Child will take over HMT from October 19 - 21. Scottish Opera will make a return with Autumn show La Traviata on November 2 & 4, and the company’s new production of Eugine Onegin will play on May 10 & 12 next year.

HMT will also play host to two Aberdeen International Youth Festival events while the festival runs in the city this August.

Chief executive of APA, Jane Spiers, said: “We aim for high quality and wide range in our programme and I’m particularly thrilled by what we have on offer in our new season brochure.  We’ve got fantastic musicals, two huge nights of rock ‘n’ roll,  family shows and we’re delighted to have Scottish Opera’s acclaimed production of La Traviata – and that’s just our ‘new to season’ shows.

“Already on sale we have a new show by Aberdeen’s own Lyric Musical Society celebrating its 65th Anniversary with a wonderful production of Anything Goes, and a host of other great musicals including MAMMA MIA! and Sister Act. The mesmerising The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time will make a very welcome return to us and I’m also excited about Hedda Gabler, which received rave reviews in a sold-out run at the National Theatre.”

Based on the film of the same name, Flashdance will have you dancing like you’ve never danced before. Alex, an 18-year-old welder by day and ‘flashdancer’ by night, dreams of becoming a professional dancer, and when a romance complicates her ambitions, she harnesses it to drive her dreams. Prepare to be blown away by phenomenal choreography to the score, which includes smash hits Maniac, Manhunt, I Love Rock & Roll and the award-winning title track Flashdance – What a Feeling. Casting for this show is still to be announced.

The acclaimed Watermill Theatre production of Crazy for You is the ultimate feel-good musical. Strictly Come Dancing winner Tom Chambers stars in this multi-award winning, romantic comedy, featuring a fabulous score from the Gershwin brothers’ songbook.

The production charts the troubled love story of Bobby, son of a wealthy New York banking family and frustrated Broadway hoofer, and Polly, daughter of the proprietor of a failing theatre in Deadrock, Nevada. Sent to close the theatre down, Bobby falls for Polly and, in the guise of a Hungarian impresario, decides to save the theatre by putting on a show. Mistaken identities, heartbreak, happiness and a wealth of memorable tunes, including I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Embraceable You all feature in this exhilarating celebration of the great Broadway musicals.

Family show The Gruffalo’s Child promises to a magical introduction to theatre for little ones aged three and upwards. One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s child ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he?

Scottish Opera’s La Traviata is a passionate, flamboyant and gripping show that has been in high demand worldwide since its Scottish Opera premiere in 2008. Set in the demi-monde of 1880s Paris, this stunning show is designed with sumptuous period style and gets to the core of Violetta and Alfredo’s doomed love affair – finding a heartbreakingly human story in the midst of a hedonistic world where both the rich and the wretched have their fun. Verdi’s magnificent score sweeps the characters through their every shifting mood, with Russia-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina heading a cast of international talent. Eugine Onegin, at HMT next May, revolves around Tchaikovsky’s soaring score, not heard on Scottish Opera’s main stage since 1993. A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends.

Building on the huge success of their 2016 European Tour, The Ultimate Eagles celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary album Hotel California. The show recreates The Eagles’ original Grammy award-winning masterpiece, perfectly performed by the band’s very own award-winning musicians.

And following on from the sell-out success of the last show at HMT, The Simon & Garfunkel Story (50th Anniversary Tour) will return to the city theatre, with projections and film footage as part of the show, with a full live band performing all the hits including Mrs Robinson, Cecilia, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Homeward Bound and many more.

His Majesty’s Theatre will also play host to AIYF for the NYOS Symphony Orchestra and the AIYF International Variety Gala on August 3 and August 5 respectively.

Tickets for these new shows (with the exception of Scottish Opera) will go on sale to APA Friends on Thursday, April 20 and to general bookers on Tuesday, April 25. Tickets for Scottish Opera are on sale to APA Friends on Monday, April 24 and to general bookers on Monday, May 1. Tickets for La Boheme are already on sale.
