Local young musicians are to be give the rare opportunity to workshop with one of the most exciting, in-demand live jazz performers in the country – for free.
Widely regarded as the emerging ‘voice’ of mainstream Jazz in the UK, double MOBO Award winning saxophonist YolanDa Brown is playing Aberdeen’s Lemon Tree on Tuesday, March 27, with a full live band and backing vocalists.
And she plans to hold a workshop in the city centre venue from 2pm to 3pm on the day of her performance to guide young musicians aged eight upwards (grades 1-5) on playing with emotion and feeling.
The session is free for anyone who has bought a ticket to the show, but the class is limited a maximum of 60 participants, and places must be booked, giving ages and musical grade level, through Aberdeen Box Office by phone at 01224 641122 or in person at the Music Hall and His Majesty’s Theatre.
The premier female saxophonist in the UK, YolanDa has toured with The Temptations, Errol Brown, Courtney Pine and Diana Krall and collaborated with artists such as Mica Paris, Soweto Kinch and as part of Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.
She was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by East London University and also invited to meet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.
In addition, she has played for the President of Russia and is a Celebrity Ambassador for HRH The Prince of Wales and His Prince’s Trust.
