WICKED, the global musical phenomenon that tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, went on public sale today, Thursday 21 November 2013, at His Majesty’s Theatre, with ticket buyers waiting in line at the Box Office from 6 a.m. Aberdeen Performing Arts staff provided hot drinks, umbrellas and Wicked cupcakes to fans, with the first 100 customers being gifted a CD of the original Broadway cast recording.
The first customer, Joy McIntosh from Elgin, to book tickets to the sensational show was presented with a bouquet of flowers to mark the occasion.
Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK & Ireland) of Wicked said: “We have all been truly overwhelmed by the response of ticket buyers in Aberdeen. The city seems to have really embraced Wicked and we'd like to thank the venue staff for all their hard work as well as the ticket buyers themselves. We all very much look forward to our arrival at His Majesty’s Theatre in 2015”.
Jane Spiers, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts, the company which operates His Majesty’s Theatre, said: “Tickets really are flying out the door for Wicked. The response has been overwhelming as you would expect for one of the most phenomenally successful musicals in the world but we would really like to thank the public for queuing with such good humour and patience in the early hours of a wintry Aberdeen morning.”
The strictly limited 4-week season at His Majesty’s Theatre will run from Tuesday 5 May 2015 until Saturday 30 May 2015 as part of the award-winning musical’s major UK and Ireland Tour.
Acclaimed as “a magical mystery tour through the fantasy land of Oz" (London Evening Standard), the record-breaking London production continues its open-ended run at the Apollo Victoria Theatre where it is already the 15th longest-running musical in West End theatre history.
Wicked has already been seen by over 38 million people around the world and has 9 productions running concurrently. The original Broadway remains “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times) after a decade at the Gershwin Theatre. The West End production is now in its 8th year and recently celebrated its 3000th performance.
In a brilliantly witty re-imagining of the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked has music and lyrics by multi GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, musical staging by Wayne Cilento and is directed by two-time Tony Award® winner and Olivier Award nominee Joe Mantello. Wicked is based on the acclaimed novel, ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, by Gregory Maguire.
Wicked is produced by: Marc Platt, Universal Pictures Stage Productions, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. Executive Producer (UK & Ireland): Michael McCabe.
