Aberdeen Music Hall has been shortlisted in two categories in the annual Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards following its £9 million Transformation.
The project, which saw the 200 year-old listed building undergo major excavation and restoration works, has been shortlisted in the Building Conservation and Community Benefit categories.
The ambitious project saw the 200 year-old venue undergo extensive excavations below ground to create a new lower ground floor, freeing up space for a new performance studio, new creative learning studio, new café bar, restaurant and re-located box office.
The works also included significant excavations and interventions to improve access from street to seat including new lifts and ramps to allow everyone, including people with restricted mobility, to access all levels from basement to balcony for the first time in the building’s history.
Aberdeen Performing Arts Chief Executive, Jane Spiers, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the Music Hall Transformation project has been recognised in two categories – Building Conservation and Community Benefit by the RICS.
“We have an immense amount of pride in the finished Music Hall, after two years of hard work by all involved it has been wonderful to see so many people enjoying the refurbished venue.
“The architect and contractors worked so hard to help bring our vision to fruition and we are so grateful to everyone who contributed to its success. The Music Hall is such an iconic building in the North East and for it to be celebrated in this way is fantastic.
“During our Stepping In opening weekend in December we welcomed 11,000 people through the doors, and it was wonderful to see so many people celebrating all the talent and creativity we have in the North-east.
Our opening season is now in full swing and we can’t wait to see what the future brings for the Music Hall.”
All category winners go forth for the acclaimed regional Project of the Year title, awarded to the scheme that demonstrates outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment to adding value to its local area.
All Scottish winners go on to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final in November 2019, for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
The RICS Awards 2019, Scotland, will be held on Thursday 2 May at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa.
