Legendary musical Jesus Christ Superstar announced for His Majesty’s Theatre

A brand new stage production of iconic global phenomenon Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to Aberdeen, stopping off at His Majesty’s Theatre from Tuesday, October 10 to Saturday, October 14.

A global phenomenon for decades, Jesus Christ Superstar’s iconic 1970’s rock score was originally released as a concept album and opened on Broadway in 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The original London production ran for over eight years. By the time it closed, after 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history at that time. Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Gethsemane’ and ‘Superstar’.

Aberdeen Performing Arts Director of Programming and Creative Projects, Ben Torrie, said: “Jesus Christ Superstar has been wowing audiences since it first exploded on to the musicals scene in 1971, creating an impact that is still felt today.

“This new production is fused with the same energy, charisma and amazing music and will be an exciting new addition to the line up of musicals at His Majesty’s Theatre this year.”

Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) directs this stunning new production. Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, this reimagined production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades.

Casting to be announced.
