Granite Noir: An Introduction to Publishing

Ever wanted to know how a book came about? How it went from author’s manuscript to sitting in your favourite bookshop for you to buy? Granite Noir has teamed up with the Society of Young Publishers Scotland to help explain exactly how the publishing industry works and what goes into the publishing process. You’ll have the chance to listen to industry professionals speak about their roles, ask them questions and find out how you could enter the industry too!

Angie Crawford

Angie Crawford looks after the Scottish books offer at Waterstones and is also Category Manager for Cookery. She has worked as a bookseller for over 20 years in a variety of roles including children’s books.

Eilidh MacLennan

Eilidh is the Sales Assistant for Edinburgh University Press. She previously worked as the Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator for Luath Press. She is a graduate of the Edinburgh Napier Publishing MSc and Robert Gordon University Media BA Hons.

Vicki Rutherford

Vicki Rutherford is Head of Editorial Management at Canongate Books. In this role she oversees the editorial production of Canongate’s entire list of titles and liaises with the commissioning team, the production and art teams and Canongate’s authors to ensure all books are delivered on time and to budget. Vicki was born and brought up in Aberdeen but left to study English Literature at Edinburgh University in 2002 and has lived in Edinburgh since then. She did a Publishing Postgraduate degree at Edinburgh Napier University in 2007 and after interning at Jenny Brown Associates and Barrington Stoke Ltd she began work at Barrington Stoke as Editorial Assistant. She became Editor there in 2010 before moving to Canongate as Managing Editor in 2013. She was promoted to Head of Editorial Management at Canongate in 2020.

Ceris Jones

Ceris Jones is Head of Sales and Marketing at Sandstone Press, an award-winning independent publisher based in the Scottish Highlands. She manages campaigns for a variety of fiction and non-fiction, from debut novels to books by internationally established authors including Jokha Alharthi, Jørn Lier Horst and Volker Kutscher. She has an MA in Business Management and Marketing from Heriot-Watt University, and an MSc in Publishing from Edinburgh Napier University.
