Joyce Falconer to join the cast of Beauty and the Beast

News – 30 Sep 2021

Aberdeen Performing Arts today announced actress Joyce Falconer will join the cast of this year’s unmissable His Majesty’s Theatre pantomime, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, alongside ‘Call the Midwife’ star Laura Main, Aberdonian actress Danielle Jam and returning favourites Alan McHugh and Paul James Corrigan, from Saturday 4 December 2021 until 2 January 2022.

Joyce was raised in Aberdeen and trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is most familiar to audiences as ‘River City’s’ iconic character Roisin McIntyre, who recently made a return to the cobbles of Shieldinch. Joyce is also a pantomime favourite and has appeared in ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow White’, ‘The Wizard That Never Woz’ and ‘Pinocchio’ and also performed at His Majesty’s Theatre in her teens. A familiar face to the theatre, she was an usherette and barmaid at the venue in the 90’s and went on to play a flying Fairy Godmother in their Centenary Panto in 2006.

Joyce has worked extensively in theatre throughout her career with recent credits include ‘Aye, Elvis’ by Morna Young and Moliere’s ‘Tartuffe’ adapted by Liz Lochhead (Edinburgh Fringe/Adelaide Festival). Her TV and film credits include ‘River City’, ‘Taggart’, ‘Rab C Nesbitt’, ‘Cardiac Arrest 1&2’, ‘Finney’, ‘Beyond The Bothy’, and ‘Linda’ in The Hawk. She has also been the feature of three documentaries and has performed at countless Burns’ Nights home and abroad.

Joyce said today, ‘I am delighted to be back doing Panto and it is even more special that it is in my hometown and in a theatre very close to my heart. It is such an institution in Aberdeen and I can’t wait to get started and help bring some festive joy to the city!’.

Aberdeen Performing Arts Chief Executive Jane Spiers said “Joyce is a fantastic addition to our panto cast. With her trademark Aberdonian wit and charm she will fit right in, and her natural joyful exuberance guarantees that our very own Torry quine will bring a Doric shine to the His Majesty’s Theatre stage this festive season.

“As the nights start drawing in the excitement is building for our first pantomime season in two years, and we can’t wait to bring the magic of panto back to Aberdeen.”

Dreaming of a happier life, the beautiful Belle finds herself transported to a cursed castle and held captive by a hideous beast. To her surprise, the castle is full of magical characters placed under a spell by an evil enchantress. Can Belle see beyond the monster and fall in love with her captor before the last petal falls from the enchanted rose? Or will the Beast’s selfishness cost him the world he once knew and the hand of the girl who has melted his heart?

Beauty and the Beast will be brought to audiences by the world’s biggest pantomime producer, Crossroads Pantomimes and will bring with it the hallmark of true Scottish comedy, featuring special effects, plenty of audience participation and a chance for audiences to come together and share the magic of live theatre once again.

One of the most romantic pantos of all time Beauty and the Beast will be a spectacular and enchanting production for all the family.
