Overview

Granite Noir: BBC Big Band: Criminal Tunes

The internationally renowned BBC Big Band return to Aberdeen Music Hall with a spectacular musical finale to the Granite Noir Crime Writing Festival.

Through the twentieth century and beyond, Jazz and Big Band music has become interlaced with the crime fiction and movie genres: whether it’s Michael Connelly’s jazz-loving LA detective Harry Bosch, or Duke Ellington’s soundtrack to the James Stewart movie ‘Anatomy of a Murder’.  As film composer Elmer Bernstein neatly put it:  Hollywood turned to jazz “whenever someone stole a car” – so, who better to celebrate the climax of the 2022 festival than one of the world’s finest jazz orchestras: The BBC Big Band.

Through a diverse repertoire arranged and curated by the orchestra’s conductor, Barry Forgie, the orchestra celebrates the music of crime with a swinging evening of world-class music.  From classic TV and movie sound-tracks such as ‘Shaft’, ‘Mission Impossible’, ‘James Bond’, ‘The Pink Panther’, and ‘Catch Me If You Can’ –  through to classic Big Band and Swing numbers inspired by all things crime (with a few surprises along the way!) – all performed in the BBC Big Band’s own inimitable style.
