SCO: An Evening with Francois Leleux
FARRENC Symphony No.3 in G minor
MENDELSSOHN (arr TARKMANN) Lieder ohne Worte
MENDELSSOHN The Hebrides
SCHUBERT Symphony No.4 in C minor ‘Tragic’
François Leleux conductor / oboe
Gripping drama and high emotion in deeply Romantic music—all in the company of inspirational French oboist and conductor François Leleux, a regular and muchloved SCO collaborator.
A visionary teacher, and a fighter for women’s rights, Louise Farrenc was one of the most influential figures in French music in the 19th century. Her bold, energetic Third Symphony launches Leleux’s concert with astonishing power and brilliance, before colourful orchestral re-imaginings of Mendelssohn’s delicate piano ‘Songs without Words’, and all the adventure of his dramatic trip to the Scottish isle of Staffa in his Hebrides Overture.
Leleux closes this vibrant concert with the teenage Schubert’s compelling ‘Tragic’ Symphony, shot through with all the turbulence and exuberance of youth.
